LWL-Museum of art and culture, Münster

2005 – 2013

The Westphalian Regional Museum is being reorganised by partial demolition and the addition of new building structures. A sequence of four rooms, each with its own character, acts as an interior passage from north to south – the courtyard on Domplatz, the central foyer, the patio and the entrance courtyard from Rothenburg. This makes the ground floor into a public thoroughfare, thus giving it the desired public exposure at the centre of the museum and offering visitors an insight into the different aspects of the museum.
Inside the museum, the organisational structure is dominated by the two buildings which line this central passageway. One arises from the adjoining building along the edge of the plot and guides the visitor through the chronological collection and into the old building. A second structure, which is separated by a visible joint, contains the special exhibitions, the history of the local region and the temporary exhibitions. The spatial effect of the separation between these buildings is visible in the joint, and it is tangibly present in the staircase situated between the two structures. The walking tour through the museum is also punctuated with deliberate resting areas which offer views out of the windows to fixed points in the urban context. Because of the offset arrangement of the courtyards, the exhibition rooms differ in their depth, and with their artificial and natural lighting they can be used flexibly for different purposes.
