Museum Georg Schäfer, Schweinfurt

1997 – 2000

Above a pedestal defined by an existing underground car park, the museum building unfolds its own independent form which corresponds to its use. It appears as an architectural sculpture alongside the old town, but with its cutaway sections and passageways it matches the old town structure, so that the building blends with the fragmentary small unit structure of the old town in spite of its large volume.
The raised entrance storey leads to a central staircase which takes visitors up to the temporary exhibition rooms and the graphic collection on the first floor, then on to the storey containing the main collection. The second floor covers almost the entire ground area of the plot, which enables all paintings in the permanent exhibition to be displayed in daylit rooms. The horizontal arrangement of the exhibition layout permits a variation of room sizes and proportions, and above the structural spatial elements such as the access hall and the light courtyards it enables clear orientation highlights and external reference points to be created. The resulting division into groups of rooms is underlined by the colours in the rooms.
