Commercial block on the Oberanger, Munich

2012 – 2016

This representative office building is situated in the centre of Munich near the City Museum. To ensure the new building fit into the historically significant location in Munich’s Old Town, the artistic characteristics of the surrounding historic facades were analysed and formally adapted. The levels are horizontally emphasised according to the traditional building divisions of ground floor, central area and top floor, and are divided by vertically proportioned windows and facade surfaces. In the upper levels, the windows are grouped into pairs based on historic models. An abstracted ornamental pattern on the facade carries the floral ornamentation of the surrounding facades through to the present. Whereas the ground floor is emphasised by its closed elements and widow soffits, the facade elements made of glass fibre reinforced concrete exhibit an ever increasing degree of perforation and transparency with their increasing height. Finally, the recessed top floor is divided solely by a glazed facade with adjustable, perforated aluminum elements. The office space in the upper levels can be flexibly used as open-plan, double or single offices, whereas the ground floor features retail spaces typical for the area.
